You Work Hard, Do They?

As leaders and managers, we often may find ourselves frustrated with what we perceive as a lack of motivation on the part of those we manage or supervise. So how would you answer this question:
Can you truly motivate another human being?

My belief is that you CANNOT MOTIVATE ANOTHER PERSON. That may sound rather pessimistic, but let’s examine it from another perspective. As managers and leaders within our organizations, we CAN do much to create an environment where people will become self-motivated.

Let’s look at the rationale for the belief that we cannot motivate another person. In our work with others over the years, we have discovered that behavior is almost always “needs-driven”. What do we mean by that? Think of a newborn child. First the need occurs, then the feeling, then the behavior. The baby has a need for food, which triggers a feeling of intense hunger, which results in the baby crying. Most mothers and fathers can distinguish their newborns’ cry for food from other sorts of cries.

As we grow older, other elements factor into our behavior, such as our values, our life experiences and our thoughts and feelings. It has been said we are either motivated by what we “feel” like doing or by what we “think” we should be doing. It is the old “pleasure/fear” motivator. You may be familiar with the “carrot/stick” concept as well.

In order for us to be more effective as leaders, and to create an environment where people are self-motivated, we must understand what lies below the “needs-driven” behavior we are seeing. It is often just the tip of the iceberg. By getting to know our associates, we can better understand what is driving their behavior. This is one of the keys to creating a high performing team.

We use a behavioral-based model called DISC to assist our clients in better understanding these needs. For example, someone with a high Dominance style of behavior has a need for results and achievement. A person with a high Influence style has a need for social recognition and competence. Someone with a high Steadiness style has a need for acceptance and stability. And someone with a high Conscientiousness style has a need for accuracy and correctness.

Obviously, as human beings, we are much more complicated than this, but it can be a start in looking below the surface of the iceberg. Many of us have a combination of at least two of these styles, and sometimes three. The behavior we see is only the tip of the iceberg.

If each of these behavioral styles has different needs and goals, how can we begin to create an environment that works for most everyone? Here are five tips to get us moving in the right direction regardless of individual styles.

** Be clear on expectations up front **
Let people know what is important to you and what you expect from them. Share your own style and needs with your fellow associates and friends.

** Walk the talk and lead by example **
Step in to support your team at every opportunity. Maintain your own sense of personal integrity at all times.

** Get to know your people and what makes them tick **
Be a student of understanding differences, and adapt your style to meet their needs. Provide opportunities for people to operate from their strengths.

** Provide honest feedback, and continuous coaching **
Encourage an environment where team members can learn from one another, including from you, and you from them. Tell the truth.

** Encourage and reward accountability **
Provide reinforcement when people take initiative. Be the poster child for personal accountability. Admit mistakes and learn from them.

I once attended an advanced facilitation skills class, where the facilitator said something that has stayed with me all these years. She said, “you can’t take a group any further than you are”. Think about that. If I have issues around control, or trust, or rigidity, it will almost certainly surface in our work as a group or a team.

Keeping the above quote in mind, it also begs looking at a very difficult question. Am I possibly a part of the problem? Am I creating the right environment so people want to come to work and want to contribute fully?

If I can begin to work on myself first, things will begin to shift. I have to get honest with myself, and my own needs, to determine what is driving my own behavior. I have to slay my own dragons before I can create an environment where others can do the same. I must assess my own level of motivation and my own attitude, before I can support others in this endeavor. By working on my own self-management, I can create an environment where others are self-motivated, and where as a team we are more likely to achieve our goals. And who knows, we just might have some fun along the way as well.

Try Out The Product Idea Of Your Home Based Business

In order to avoid major disappointment, before fully launching your Home Base Business Idea, you might want to get a few customers.
If your product is relatively low-value, or you’re providing a service, then it shouldn’t be too much trouble to get a few customers and do a few dry runs. Do them a generous discount (you could even do it for free), to make sure that everything runs smoothly and the customers are satisfied at the end of it.
For example, let’s say you plan to be a landscape gardener from home. You could borrow the tools, and volunteer to do a garden for some kind of charity project – this is good, since it means that you’re doing something nice for charity, but they’re not paying for perfection, so it’s not that bad if small things go wrong. You should then go through all the motions as you would once your business is stablished, and see what comes out at the other end.
Here’s another one. Let’s say you’re an Italian living outside Italy, and you plan to start a home business cooking pasta in your kitchen and delivering it to customers (you’d be surprised how many home businesses there are in the catering industry). You could make a rough draft of a leaflet (with discounted prices) and deliver it to a small number of homes in the area, until you get a little response. You could then see if it really is feasible to make and deliver these things, and whether there would be any profit in it.
The best dry-runs, though, are the ones where you can get one client at full price. This generally happens in the kind of industry where most transactions are business-to-business, and go through a bidding process. If you’re doing something like freelance writing or artwork, this can let you take on one ‘job’ without being committed to any more afterwards. If you find it’s not for you, at least you haven’t lost too much – and if you love it, then you’re getting valuable experience before you try to take it full-time.
When you try your business out, make sure to do some kind of survey – you could hand it to the customer, include it with your delivery, or even phone up and say that you’re just calling to make sure everything is alright. Following up this way isn’t just good for you; it’s also good customer service.
One of the most common things I hear when I tell people to try out their home business ideas is that a small-scale trial wouldn’t do the idea justice, since they ‘plan to make money on scale’.
Never, ever rely solely on scale. You think that supplies will get magically cheaper if you’re doing ten orders a day instead of one? Guess again. You think you’re going to save time by doing lots of orders at once? You might save some, but not as much as you might think. When you’re trying to see whether your business is viable, you should always err on the conservative side – the thinner your margins are, the easier it is for something unexpected to happen and destroy them altogether.
You’re cheating yourself if you don’t try out your business before you start it – you’ll be throwing yourself in at the deep end, and there won’t be a lifeguard. Trying it out gives you the opportunity to make your beginner mistakes (there will be a few, I guarantee it), and to build confidence in yourself and your business without taking pointlessly large amounts of risk.
Remember you are now living the dream of owning your own business and working from home. Don’t blow this opportunity. Do things right and you won’t have any regrets?

Save More On The Move With The Right Truck Rental

Almost no one wants to deal with a move. Although it’s exciting to get a new place, the packing, lifting and unpacking just aren’t fun. Hiring movers might be an option for some, but for others the added expense takes away from other necessities they may need in the new place. Those looking to save a little money might benefit from a truck lease. Rather than having to round up every truck you can get your hands on and a ton of friends to drive and load, a single large moving truck on a lease can solve a lot of problems.

Before running out and leasing a big moving truck, however, it’s a good idea to assess what you really need. If you’re moving from a tiny studio apartment, it’s not likely you’ll need a massive truck to get the job done. But, if you have the contents of a whole home, you just might.

Truck rental agreements can be a little confusing for someone who’s never leased before.

* Exact rental dates. Make sure you have arranged for the truck for the days and hours you need it. Don’t leave this to chance. There’s nothing worse than having 10 friends show up to help you move and finding out the truck you need has been rented to someone else for that day.

* Pricing. Does the rental fee include mileage, too, or will that be an extra expense? Ask.

* Return policy. Know where you need to bring the truck back to when you’re done. If you’re moving in town, this will be easy. But, cross-country moves may require a map for the drop off location.

* Is a full tank required upon return? If it is, you’ll want to make sure this is completed before you turn the truck in.

* Is insurance offered. If it is, you likely will want to buy it unless your regular car policy will cover the truck from any damage while you’re driving it.

Once you’ve determined these things, you should be set to make the lease. Get a truck that meets your needs and isn’t too big for you to handle. Be certain to understand the terms of the lease and don’t forget to check on rental dates and confirm the reservation.

Before you pick up the truck, make sure:

* You’ve done your packing.

* Make sure breakables have been secured.

* Clearly label boxes so friends who are helping don’t put 50 pounds of books on top of your china!

* Make certain valuable items that won’t go on the truck, or shouldn’t, have been set aside so no one will load them. This includes such things as important papers, expensive antiques and even electronic devices.

A rental truck can really help make a move go more smoothly. Getting ready for the big day before you get the big truck, however, can also be a big assistance.

You’ve Got An Idea For Your Home Business… Now Stare At Other Businesses.

You wanted to start a home based business. Now you have a money making idea and you’ve done the initial checks and preliminary research so, Once you’ve gone through the preliminary checks, the best way to research your idea isn’t to keep staring over at other businesses – it’s to look to your potential customers. Talk to as many people as you can about your idea, start a little canvassing, do market research surveys in the street. Do anything to try and figure out how many potential customers you’ve got out there.
Now it’s time to get specific. When you’re running a home business, you’re not going to be big. You don’t have a big advertising budget, and you’re not going to be able to have lots of customers and make a small profit from each. The kind of market you need is called a ‘niche market’ – a set of customers who want something very specific, and aren’t currently able to get it. It might seem strange, but the best niches can often seem really obscure. You might know what industry you want to be in, but exactly what are you going to be doing, and for who? Answer that question and you are on your way to success.
Here’s an exercise that you really need to do. Take your home business idea and write it down. You are only allowed to use one side of one sheet of paper for this. The point of this is to make sure that you know the absolute core of your idea. It’s all too easy to get bogged down in details when you start a home business, and you need to make sure you know exactly what your idea is, in its simplest form.
Once you’ve got the basics down, that’s when you can start to develop the idea. The aim here is to take your core idea and turn it into products, suppliers, customers and work. For example, if your idea is to provide web design for small businesses, then this is where you need to sit down and figure out what suppliers you’d need (web hosting, for example), and what services you’d be providing for customers.
Think of it as inputs and outputs. Imagine, for example, that your business is making clothes. It starts with the input you don’t control – what you ‘outsource’, meaning that you pay to order it in from outside suppliers. For clothes, this would be a sewing machine, material, thread, and so on. The next input is what you add yourself. This would probably be the design and manufacture of the clothes. The output is the finished product – the clothes, ready to sell.
Wow you are well on your way now. This is going to be a lot easier than you thought and they said you couldn’t do it.

Start Relaxing With A Stress Free Vacation Package

We all need a vacation from time to time. Whether it’s a whirlwind trip around the world or a simple weekend away, unplugging and recharging are absolute musts in this fast-paced, always-on-the-go world. But how can a vacationer actually relax when there are so many details to contend with? Vacation packages can be the answer.

Vacation packages can be a little intimidating, however. Coming in all shapes, sizes and prices, packages are about as varied as they possibly could be. The sheer amount of choices available in packages can make a traveler’s head spin.

So, how does one find the best vacation packages? The answer is by following a few simple steps.

* Before shopping for packages, it’s very smart to decide a budget and destination or at least a few possible destinations first. If you don’t know where you want to go, you can’t find the best deal! Budget, too, is very important because you’ll want to shop packages within your range.

* Type of transportation. Do you want to go on a cruise? Fly? Drive? Packages can include a number of components, which can include rental cars, hotel lodging, food and more. Remember, when dealing with cruises, these typically are all-inclusive already. This means they include pretty much everything, including the lodging, food and entertainment in the main price. Extras like shopping excursions and so on might cost more, but the basics are all there.

* Details you want included in a package. Some travel agencies or travel sites that offer packages let customers tailor them to meet their needs. Package components can include such things as airfare, cruise costs, rental cars, food, entertainment and even sightseeing and guided tours. How much or how little is included in your package can be up to you. Sometimes it’s a good idea to shop package components separately and then included to see what the better deal is.

* Fine print. Make sure you understand any fine print included within a package. Is the package you’re booking nonrefundable? Is insurance included? Do you need to take care of any small details? Know what you’re buying before you click on the purchase button or sign on the dotted line.

* For those choosing cruises, it’s always good idea to check both directly with the cruise line and other routes of booking, such as travel agents or travel sites. Sometimes the cruise lines actually charge more to book directly with them. Odd, but true.

Vacation packages are a fantastic way to make sure all the details of a trip, or at least the ones that cause the most worry, are taken care of for you. They should also generally involve a price break. Since you’re paying for a lot at once, through one location, the pieces should come together and save you a little money.

Good packages take the worry of planning off the travelers and allow them to simply enjoy their time away. They can be as involved or as uninvolved as a traveler might want. No matter the destination, there’s likely to be a package trip available.

If You Want To Make Money At Home, Researching And Developing Your Idea Is A Must.

What about market research. If you think your idea is original, then you might be right – but don’t bank on it. Come up with as many word combinations relating to your idea as you can, and then search for them all. If you have trouble thinking of what to search for, try to think like a customer of your potential business – what would they look for to find you? The chances are that you’ll at least find something similar to what you’re doing. If you don’t, then there are three possibilities: you’re a genius who’s come up with an original business idea, you’re no good at searching, or your idea isn’t practical.
However much you might think that the best ideas are original, it’s far better if you can find other people who are doing what you’re doing successfully. It’s even better if you can take something that’s tried-and-tested in another country and import it to your own. If there’s no-one else operating in your chosen market, then it doesn’t necessarily mean that no-one has ever thought of it or tried – it’s more likely that it just turned out to be impractical.
There is another thing to look out for, though: you might find that your search terms find lots of sites willing to sell you a ‘kit’ to start up that business more easily. These kits are almost always worthless, but the fact that they exist tells you that your idea is a common one, and the market may be saturated. The ideal home business, to my mind, is one where there seems to be an enthusiastic community of other successful home businesses, but not to the point where everyone seems to be doing it, or telling you how to do it.
Once you’ve gone through the preliminary checks, the best way to research your idea isn’t to keep staring over at other businesses – it’s to look to your potential customers. Talk to as many people as you can about your idea, start a little canvassing, do market research surveys in the street. So You Want To Start A Home Business?

Every day we hear about how many people are opening up home based businesses. Working from home is a dream for many – but actually going ahead and starting a home business is very difficult. So what makes so many people want to do it, and why would you ever try such a crazy thing? Apart from working in your pajamas, fighting the traffic from you bedroom to your home office, being able to put your kids on the bus and watch them come home, here are some common reasons, and some things to consider.
You want to build something because you want more out of life. You are tired of working for others, selling your time for money. It suddenly hit you like a bolt of lightning: you’ve thought of a great business idea. This is perhaps the number one reason that people go into business from home: they’ve come up with something great that they really believe in, but can’t afford to rent any business premises. It does depend on what the business is, but working from home is often ideal in these situations.
Remember, though, that even the best ideas take hard work to become a reality. The kind of ideas that are good for a home-based business are ones that can become at least partly real quickly, and start bringing in an income – you shouldn’t sit at home for a year working on something that’s making you nothing whatsoever.
All of us have something that they’re really passionate about, and would spend the rest of their life doing if they could, just for the enjoyment of it. For some its sports like golf or hunting. Others its model airplanes or collecting stuff. Nobody can explain it but we all have stuff we enjoy and we because experts at it. Getting paid for doing what you love is obviously appealing – even if you only earn a living wage, it’d be your idea of paradise.
Make sure, though, that you’d be able to take it if you had to make a living from your passion. It’s the things we’re closest to that hurt us the most – think of how you might feel if no-one buys what you’ve made, or if they send it back and with a note saying “what rubbish, I demand a refund!” Can you cope with your hobby becoming commercial?
You must be ready to accept that not everybody thinks of your passion or hobby as a passion or hobby. The main reason is that you will be asking them for money and when it comes to money that’s when people become passionate.

How To Beat The Competition…Provide Better Service

So now you know that even if you have a home based business, you still have competitors. If you want to make money at home, you must find a way to be better than these competitors.

The best way is to provide a Service or better service. It is perfectly possible to sell products of the exact same physical quality while providing a better service – to the customer, quality and service are almost the same thing. There are companies out there who can sell computer software that their customers could get almost for free, simply because the customers like to have the support services that they get with their purchase.

Likewise, if service is all you do, then it should be pretty simple to provide a more attentive and personal service than your competitors. ‘One-on-one business’ gives you a great opportunity to become friendly with your customers, and that’s often worth its weight in gold to them. So by doing the same differently you will win…

Make it Simpler. Many businesses offer great products, but they’re pitching them to very technical customers. If you’re an expert in your field, you will very often find that you can build a great business simply by selling the same thing as your competitors, but going to some trouble to explain and market it to a wider section of the public. Anytime you start using some new technology, the chances are that someone along the way had to work out how to make it simpler. Few new technologies or inventions come pre-packaged for consumer use.

Change the Design. Make it smaller, or change the color, or make it easier to open and fix. There are all sorts of ways to subtly redesign a product and give it all sorts of bells and whistles that customers will really appreciate. You might even be able to buy products, modify them, and then sell them on.

Alliances…Despite what the word might lead you to think, you don’t always have to be competitive with your competitors. You might find that they have extra work sometimes that they wouldn’t mind sending over to you, or you might find that they’re willing to give you advice on starting up (if not for free, then perhaps for nothing more than the cost of a few drinks!). Of course, you shouldn’t go giving away all your secrets or giving them any other advantage, but that doesn’t mean that you should keep away. Pay special attention to any problems that they say they’ve had, or anything they do that seems to sell especially well.

Believe it or not, your competitors can be your best allies in this home business game, especially if they’re home businesses themselves – over time, your competitors might even become your friends.
